Future Food invites you to an ONLINE Teams event, organized on the occasion of the recent publication of the report from the Advisory Council on Nitrogen Problems (led by Johan Remkes). The council states that the government's aim to reduce nitrogen emissions by 26% by 2030 is insufficient. According to the Advisory Board, nitrogen emissions must be at least halved in 2030 if nature is to be restored. On Monday 8 June 2020 the Committee presented its final recommendation 'Not everything is possible everywhere'.
The report was commissioned by the Minister of Agriculture in response to societal debate about the large impact of nitrogen deposition on biodiversity, nature and water- and air quality. Last year, this debate culminated in a lawsuit of a civil action group against the state to comply with legally binding agreements on the maximum amount of nitrogen deposition. This lawsuit was ruled in favor of the action group. The government responded with a range of measures to comply at short notice including a stop on large infrastructural projects, suspension of permits for farmers and a national drop in the speed limit on highways. The farmer protests in The Hague were a direct response to those measures. For the long term, they developed a strategy to structurally reduce nitrogen emissions that the current report addresses and criticizes.
